Tekfen Group can trace its roots back to a small engineering-consultancy services office established in Ankara, Turkey, in 1956. Today, it is a major publicly-traded group of companies with operations in contracting, agri-industry, real estate development, finance, and investment.
Each one of the Group’s 44 companies and seven affiliates are profitable and efficient in their own right, and are leaders in their respective sectors in terms of revenue generation and the pioneering role they play.
Indeed, Tekfen Group holds a prestigious place in the Turkish business world. As well as generating $ 1.3 billion in revenue and holding $1.7 billion worth of assets, the ‘Tekfen’ name, which is used by most of the Group’s companies, is one of Turkey’s most widely recognized and positively regarded brands. Tekfen Contracting Group, Tekfen Holding’s largest subsidiary in terms of revenue, is an internationally respected contracting group that conducts a considerable share of its operations overseas.
Ever since its foundation in 1956, Tekfen Construction and Installation Co. Inc., the principle company in the Group, has been implementing key construction projects in 15 countries on three continents.
Tekfen Construction specializes in oil, natural gas and petrochemical plants, pipelines, land and marine terminals, off-shore platforms, tank farms, oil refineries, pumping stations, power plants, highways, subways, bridge and tunnel construction, electrical and instrumentation projects, infrastructure projects, production facilities, commercial building complexes, and major sports complexes.
It provides its customers with turnkey solutions, encompassing EPC (engineering-procurement-construction) in the majority of its areas of activity. In addition to Tekfen Construction, the Contracting Group achieves service integrity through its incorporation of Tekfen Engineering Co. Inc., which provides engineering services, particularly for industrial plants, and Tekfen Manufacturing and Engineering Co. Inc., with its expertise in manufacturing process equipment and storage tanks. Tekfen Contracting Group’s 2010 operations included 19 projects in ten countries and at year-end had an active backlog of $1.8 billion, with 22,000 employees.
This portfolio is centered in three regions, the Caspian Region, the Middle East and North Africa, and includes projects in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Libya, Morocco and Bulgaria, as well as Turkey.
Defining a Nation
Tekfen’s involvement in Qatar substantially increased with the North Road Project for ASHGHAL, with a value of $900 million, but the company has also taken on three other projects in the country.
Construction started in July of 2005 for Ras Laffan-Mesaieed Ethane Gas Pipeline (EPC) Project, and was completed within the year 2009. The pipeline, which is approximately 127km long with a value of $115 million, was the company’s first contract in Qatar for Qatar Petroleum, which included the maintenance work on the pipeline for the first year.
Another project that Tekfen has undertaken in Qatar is Umm Bab-Mesaieed Oil Pipeline Project, again for Qatar Petroleum signed in 2006. The total value of this project, which was undertaken on a turnkey (EPC) delivery basis, with a length of 80.5 kilometres and completed in September 2009, was $56.5 million. One of the recent contracts in Qatar is for construction of Low Density Polyethylene Plant for QAPCO (Qatar Petrochemical Company).
The construction of the $165 million facility will last until around February 2012, and is Tekfen’s fourth project in Qatar. In the meantime Tekfen got awarded by the ‘Private Engineering Office’ for the construction of the Ceremonial Road having a value of $150 million. In addition to the above, Tekfen Construction is also willing to increase its existing capacity and presence in Qatar, especially for the forthcoming investment/projects.
The metro and railway project, stadia, Lusail area developments, highways and similar infrastructure works, water and power projects are all being targeted by the company, which is ready to participate and compete during this exciting growth period for the country. Tekfen believes that its experience in the region since 1979, its presence in Qatar since 2005, and its values and aims – in tandem with the planned investments and projects in Qatar – are all excellent reasons for the company to be in the country and to continue to increase its workload, adding value to projects that will define a nation.
Quality People, Quality Performance
Tekfen’s strength is its ability to provide a flexible and personal approach to contracts, ensuring its client’s needs and requirements are the forefront of everything it undertakes.
The company’s aim is to eradicate all the stresses involved within construction by supplying, delivering, organizing and overseeing all construction works to guarantee the best quality finish to the correct budget throughout all of its projects. Tekfen is made up of people who are equipped and trained for the work they do, motivated to perform their jobs well, and committed to the principles and goals of the company.
Continuing education is offered to all staff through construction courses, seminars, and conferences. The company also has a very comprehensive and progressive safety programme, having 2004, 2005 and 2007 safety awards internationally.
It strives to provide its clients with superior levels of customer satisfaction, product quality, aggressive scheduling and competitive pricing. Its success is measured by team performance, client responsiveness, strategic growth, superior quality and consistent results, all of which enable the company to continue building an unparalleled reputation for excellence. In fact, Tekfen’s mission statement sums up its business philosophy perfectly, “Sustainable success and long-term achievement over short-term profit, in consistency with our core values of a commitment to ethics, integrity and respect for people and nature.”
The Highest Quality Standards
The traditional values of integrity, quality and excellence are well established throughout Tekfen and every employee of the company understands how important these values are in satisfying the needs and expectations of their clients. Thorough planning, monitoring and managing of each phase of a project consistently assure that the highest standards of quality, scheduling, and cost effectiveness are achieved. Client satisfaction is Tekfen’s primary objective.
At Tekfen they are proud of their history, tradition and integrity. Furthermore, the company emphasizes a single source of responsibility from the project conception to completion, in not only its client relations, but its own internal management processes.
To facilitate this approach, a highly skilled project manager assumes full responsibility for the work throughout the various stages of design development and construction, resulting in optimal control, communication, and accountability. Consequently, the client has total peace of mind, a commodity that you simply can’t put a value on.
